Ceramic cooling towers are constructed from ceramic, a material formed from a variety of compounds, usually a metallic and a nonmetallic element, such as silicon and carbon or aluminum and oxygen (alumina). They are systems that provide cooling of water and other fluids through the removal of heat from the fluid. Although ceramic cooling towers offer aesthetic advantages over other cooling towers constructed of other materials, they are typically more expensive.
Ceramics are formed from clays and other naturally-occurring minerals or are created from chemically-processed powders. Highly arc and track resistant, ceramics are dimensionally stable at elevated temperatures, resisting burn. Ceramic cooling towers are also able to resist heat, chemicals, weather, and bacteria without allowing them to affect the material’s properties or alter its structure.
Ceramic cooling tower designs are either crossflow or counterflow, depending on the direction that the air and water contact. Routine maintenance should be performed on a ceramic cooling tower just as for any other cooling tower.
