Catches

A catch, or latch, is a mechanism used to hold a door closed. Catches come in many different designs and are used in virtually every building and automobile. Some of the most common forms of latches are compression latches, draw latches, slam latches, and spring latches.

Basic door catches are integrated into the handles of doors. A metal bar retracts and extends when the mechanism is activated. When this bar is fitted into the hole on the door frame, the door remains closed, or latched.

Catches are used in virtually every industry, but specifically in transportation and construction. Catches are used to keep doors shut in automobiles, airplanes, boats, and recreational vehicles. In homebuilding, latches can be used on doors, gates, cabinets, and windows.
