Paper Cans

Paper cans are an alternative solution to the more common metal cans and are used for a wide range of packaging purposes. Industries such as cosmetics, food, fragrance, gifts and tea packaging make use of cylinders and tubes made from cardboard or paper fibers. In industrial terms, paper cans may also be referred to as shipping tubes or postal tubes, and are also commonly used as coin banks.

Paper Cans

Paper tubes or cans are able to be fabricated in a wide variety of shapes and sizes depending on the needed dimensions. Paper and cardboard can be constructed to a variety of thickness and strength, and adhesives can be added to the wood pulp during the fabrication process to increase the durability of the materials. A common manufacturing method is to take ribbons of cardboard or thick paper and wrap them around a mandrel. Multiple layers can be added if desired for extra thickness and strength. Paper cans are cylindrical shapes with metal or plastic caps and bottoms, or with a cylindrical lid also fabricated from paper for a flush fit, or as an over cap. Both ends of the can may be removable, or one end may be permanently sealed while the other can be lifted off and twisted, locked or slipped back on. For some cosmetic purposes, plastic closures or caps may include shaker tops, or selective distribution caps.

All sizes of paper cans are able to be custom designed according to intended use. Manufacturers can put logos, product information, patterns or designs on the outside of the tubes. Decorative features can be added to the outside of the cans, such as handles or clear plastic inserts. The interior of the tubes can be layered with foil, or plastic or another sealant for certain food or cosmetic products. The cans can also be fabricated with differing levels of oxygen and moisture barriers in order to protect the contents of the cans. Paper cans are an ideal packaging choice for many industries due to their lightweight nature. Shipping and transportation costs are often affected by weight; therefore, using lighter packaging is a cost-effective choice for manufacturers. Much waste is produced by packaging used in various industries and it is necessary for manufacturers to try and make environmentally responsible choices. The paper and cardboard materials used in the construction of paper cans are recyclable and so there is less waste produced as a result of package use.
