Exterior and interior washing is an important part of car maintenance. It can help to increase the longevity of a car by removing accumulated contaminants like dirt and corrosive materials like road salt. This also improves the aesthetic quality of the car. Hand car washing is an alternative to
automated car washes or
self service car washes. Some customers, particularly those with expensive or antique cars, are unwilling to trust their vehicles to automated washing equipment. In such cases, the individual attention of an employee can be an attractive alternative. Because hand car washes offer the individual attention of at least one person, they can be more expensive than automated or self service
car wash systems. During the process, workers wash the exterior of cars with towels or mitts, hoses and soap, and they sometimes offer waxing or interior cleaning for an additional fee. Interior cleaning can include vacuuming, carpet shampooing and window cleaning.
Some customers perceive hand car washing to be superior to automated car washing. Hand

They can also be more attractive options to aspiring business people; they can be simpler to start up than other car wash system varieties because instead of paying for expensive equipment, owners need only to hire workers that provide manual labor and to provide them with soap, wax and cleaning supplies. The water is generally supplied by a hose system that may be connected to a water pump. Like at-home methods, hand car washes are not the best choice from an environmental sustainability perspective. Hand car washes, particularly small scale operations, may be less likely to invest in biodegradable soap, which, when washed down into drains and sewers, can find its way into ground water and streams, which can negatively effect the environment. However, many hand car washes invest in sustainable cleaning supplies, as do other car wash system varieties.
