Direct drive blowers are air blowers that are used to generate airflow without the use of intermediate mechanical components. All direct drive mechanisms function by transferring energy directly from a motor to the intended moving parts. The advantage of direct drive over other systems (like motors that involve gearboxes) is increased efficiency (no energy is wasted in friction between superfluous gears or other parts), reduced noise, longer lifetime (because there are fewer moving parts that can fail after extended use) and precise movement.

The kind of precision offered by direct drive blowers is important in settings that make use of specialized ventilation systems. Clean rooms in research settings, hospital burn wards and other settings where careful control over indoor atmospheric conditions is necessary can all make use of direct drive blowers for air circulation purposes. Also, because of the smaller amount of extra parts necessary for the operation of a direct drive blower, maintenance costs, after the initial investment in the specialized direct drive motor, can be quite low. Because there are no extra parts to service, the only repairs that ever have to be made to the fan system involve the motor, the spinning parts, and the enclosure.
Direct drive blowers, like all other industrial blowers, can be designed in one of two configurations. Axial blowers, which feature curved blades that spin around an axis, are used in all manner of applications from ventilation and temperature control to drying. Axial fan blades spin around their axes like clock hands. In some cases, this kind of configuration may not be practical. In certain kinds of ductwork, for example, sharp angles make it difficult for axial blowers to be effective. Radial (or centrifugal) blowers perform when axial blowers can't. Radial blowers use enclosed blades whose movement more resembles that of waterwheel paddles than that of clock hands. The motion of the curved blades causes air to be sucked into the enclosure where it is pressurized by the blades and by centrifugal motion (because of the circular motion around the enclosure) and is expelled through a chute at high pressure. In a direct drive system, in both axial and centrifugal fan configurations, the airflow created by the fan system would be constant and precise because of the constant rotation of the direct drive motor.
