  • Different Guides for Different Slides

When it comes to linear stages, the guide is probably the most important part as this is what restricts motion on the platform to one dimension. There are several different kinds of guides and each has their positive aspects and negative aspects. Due to these characteristics, some guides are suited to very specific applications and others are more versatile. So, let's take a look at a few different types of guides and their particular attributes. Ball bearing guides, for instance, are fairly common. Often used in optics labs stages and...

  • Kid Rollers and Slide Rollers

When I was younger I loved going to play grounds or play places that had roller slides. They were always brightly colored, usually rainbow patterned, and you could run up to them then slide on your stomach all the way across. One of the places we would go to on special occasions had two of them side by side, and my friend and I would always spend half the day seeing who could slide or surf across the fastest. So naturally, when hearing slide rollers' my mind instantly reverts back...

  • Ball Bearing Slides: Simplicity Defined

Very few things in our modern society are as simple as the ball. A basic shape that children learn to recognize before they can speak, it is the shape that inspired the wheel and is therefore one of the most basic elements of engineering practices. Without the ball, who knows what our world would look like today. Just one small example of how the ball is utilized in simple but helpful ways in mechanical devices today is the ball bearing slide. This version of a linear slide is one of...

  • Ball Bearing Slides and Filing Cabinets

Up until right after college, I had never really worked in an office. Briefly once or twice while volunteering, or during my internship, but never in one that had a filing cabinet. I mean, I knew what they were obviously. Big metal contraptions with four or so drawers able to store an incredible amount of what I would assume will be recycling in a month or so I also knew that the drawers were able to open and close with the use of linear rails and ball bearings. These ball...

  • Nearly Frictionless Ball Slide Assemblies Help Keep Eyeglass Frame Tracers On Track

National Optronics, Inc. Ball slide assemblies that provide nearly friction-free performance help keep a popular line of eyeglass frame tracers on track. Frame tracers need to follow the outline of an eyeglass frame while applying only a tiny amount of pressure on the frame to avoid distortion. At the same time, the high duty cycles under which many of these machines are used creates the need for a very reliable mechanism. National Optronics, Inc., Charlottesville, Virginia, solved both of these problems at once by specifying virtually friction and maintenance free...

  • BiSlide Belt Drive Slide Assembly

BiSlide Belt Drive Slide Assembly The BiSlide Belt Drive Assembly consists of a motor/gearbox, mounted 90 degrees to a linear dovetail stage. The motor/gearbox couples to a stainless steel pulley which drives a steel reinforced timing belt. The belt drive assembly is useful for long travel and high speeds. Speeds as high as 3 meters per second can be achieved using direct drive motors and high powered controllers. For high resolution, gear reduction motors are available. The belt drive’s high efficiency make it an ideal choice for moving light...

Industry Information

Ball Bearing Slides

Ball bearing slides are the most commonly found type of linear slide or roller slide. Linear slides are used to produce smooth, low friction motion and ball bearing slides are a straightforward and low maintenance method of achieving this. Ball bearing slides use spheres composed from a durable material such as aluminum, steel or galvanized steel located within a rail or railing system set up in the desired direction of flow. The linear system is also comprised of a moving component which is attached to the railing and spherical components.

There are a number of various applications for ball bearing slides, including robotics and instrumentation construction, clean room operating systems, high-end appliances and cabinetry, as well as electronics and construction industries. A common every day use of ball bearings is in drawer slides as the weight of the drawer and its contents are easily managed by the ball bearings. However, they are typically not used for heavy weight applications as ball bearings have a lower load capacity relative to their size as they are less resistant to deterioration from the sliding process. Ball bearing systems can be powered by drive mechanisms, gravity or by hand if an operator is present. Depending on the size and weight of the load, the most appropriate system can be installed.

A limitation of ball bearing slides is their need for a specific housing or driving system which allows the bearings enough freedom of motion in order to rotate efficiently, but not so much that they movement produces is ineffective and imprecise. The systems themselves are commonly constructed from aluminum or rolled steel and typically are two linear rails of bearings within the containment guides. The carriage is supported by these rails and should move smoothly across the bearings. These systems typically do not require the frequent addition of a lubricant as the movement is not the sliding of surfaces across each other, however the railing systems themselves may have to be disassembled and cleaned periodically, especially when the linear slides are used in environments with levels of dust and debris which could contaminate the interior workings of the railings. Ball bearings create a much lower level of friction and therefore heat and are an ideal choice for many applications, providing a relatively cost-effective method of improving motion and reducing slip-stick tendencies within an operation. The balls used are easy to manufacture and are typically cheaper than components of other linear slide systems.
