Aluminum Wire

Aluminum wire is used in power grids, electronics, and welding due to its resistance to corrosion, light weight, and ability to withstand a wide range of temperatures.

Electrical transmission lines are one of the largest users of aluminum wire. Aluminum is by far the most economical and efficient metal for use in these lines. Aluminum has also been used in household wiring with varying degrees of success. Early use of aluminum wiring was in response to increased copper prices, and aluminum wire was installed in basically the same way as copper. This led to improper connections that can cause fires. However, development of better connection techniques, together with a new alloy known as AA-8000 or ACM, has made aluminum wiring a safe and practical alternative for new construction.

Aluminum wire and cable are also important components for a number of electronic products, including public address systems, remote control circuits, and coaxial cables used for cable television, broadband internet, and military uses. Copper-clad aluminum wire (CCAW) is also popular in applications where weight is important, such as in headphones and portable loudspeakers.

Aluminum wire is also an important component for many welded products such as thin wall brazing for heat exchanges and high torque drive components in automobiles; plate welding and saltwater corrosion resistance in shipbuilding; and armor plate welding for the military. Choosing a filler alloy for aluminum welding wire is important for success of the project. Important considerations when choosing an alloy include the strength and ductility of the weld, the service temperature, color match, and necessary corrosion resistance.
