Alloy Forgings

Alloy forgings contain steel and alloys, such as nickel, to produce desired properties. These steel alloys do not contain carbon. Forging is a process by which a metal is heated and given a particular shape by an application of an appropriate compressive force, typically applied using a power hammer or a press. The forging process creates a sophisticated structure that improves the physical properties of the metal. Forged alloy steel is considerably stronger and more ductile than castings.

Different types of alloy forgings include open die alloy forgings, hand alloy forgings, upset alloy forgings, roll alloy forgings, and more. The materials used in the alloy steel forging can affect the forging’s capabilities. For example, nickel alloy forgings are resistant to oxidation and can withstand temperatures up to 1800°F (982ºC). Cold forgings, typically consisting of steel and aluminum, are common in the production of industrial parts that have intricate features, such as suspension components and steering parts in automotive equipment. Cold alloy forgings are produced at temperatures ranging from room temperature to a few hundred degrees.

Alloy forgings feature consistency from one piece to another without any defects such as porosity, voids, or inclusions. The forging process creates components that have a high ratio of strength to weight and offer reliable performance in many engineering applications.
