A ductless air conditioner is useful for buildings where ductwork cannot be installed or would be prohibitively expensive. Like through-the-wall air conditioning units, ductless air conditioners are impractical for cooling very large areas, but they are quick and easy to install in buildings without existing ductwork.

Ductless Air Conditioner
Ductless air conditioning is the perfect middle ground between the through-the-wall air conditioner varieties and the central air conditioner varieties. In a ductless air conditioner, an outside unit with the compressor is mounted on an exterior wall, while an inside unit with the evaporator is mounted on an interior wall or ceiling. Although not particularly aesthetically pleasing, air conditioning units are common enough that their presence is not an eye-sore in a home, office or store. They can also be fashioned in sleek and modern models to better suit décor in certain environments. The materials used to create ductless air conditioners as well as other air conditioner models are not usually chosen for aesthetics but operational capabilities. That is why stainless steel is a popular metal for the internal parts of an air conditioner as well as the structure of the compressor since it is exposed to weather and needs proper protection, which stainless steel can provide. Stainless steel is unaffected by extreme temperature changes, chemical abrasion and basic weather abrasion, making it the perfect material for internal and external construction of air conditioners.
Functionally speaking, a ductless air conditioner works by way of the unit on the exterior of the building known as the compressor, which is a pump-like mechanism that causes pressure changes in the system. This is how the refrigerant, or heat expelling component, gets around. The most common refrigerant used today is Freon, and this refrigerant is able to move from hot to cold temperatures, absorbing the heat of whatever air is surrounding it, with incredible speed. The evaporator is the low pressure compartment where the hot air has the heat pressed out of it. Ductless air conditioners are able to cool larger areas than window air conditioners because multiple evaporators can be connected to a single compressor. For this reason, ductless air conditioners are popular in homes and retail stores, making them one of many commercial air conditioner models. They are also able to keep different rooms cooled at different temperatures. A certain temperature is maintained because of alarms that are set within the air conditioning system to go off when the room hits a certain temperature, then initiating the system to return the room's temperature to what was set on the thermostat.
