EDM Machining

EDM machining is a method by which electrical energy is used to shape and form metal parts. This process uses an electrical discharge that forms an arc between an electrode tool and a work piece to erode or remove metal in its path. It is a reliable, affordable and accurate method of machining otherwise difficult materials, and is thus becoming more widely used.

The two types of EDM machining are wire and sinker. Wire EDM machining is used for cutting shapes through a selected part or assembly; a hole is drilled into the piece and a wire is fed through to finish the machining. Sinker EDM machining is used for more complex shapes and it uses machined graphite or copper electrodes to erode the desired shape.

Because it can create intricate and complex parts, EDM machining is advantageous over other machining techniques. It can also machine hard materials and machine extremely small parts. The work piece does not get deformed through EDM machining; the finished product will not have burrs or heat damage. Also, through EDM machining, internal cavities can be cut because electrodes can rotate about two-three axis.

Common applications for EDM machining include creating plastic molds, die casting dies and forging dies. It can also be used for manufacturing engine parts such as titanium alloy or nickel based super alloy compressor blades. Prototype and production parts are more often made through EDM machining methods, especially in the aerospace and electronics industries because of the low production quantities. Other industries that use EDM machining include food and beverage, automobile, stamping, extruding, defense and medical.
