Materials Used in Manufacturing 30 Gallon Drums

The international standard size is a 55 gallon drum, so 30 gallon drums are a bit smaller but still quite serviceable. The different materials from which 30 gallon drums are made dictate what substances they can contain. For example, stainless steel drums are one of the preferred choices for storing corrosive materials, as it offers the best corrosion resistance. Stainless steel drums are also good for holding fragile materials because they can withstand extreme heat (from -60°F to 600°F).

Plastic drums, often made from polyethylene, in addition to being chemical-resistant, are resistant to denting and can be applied to both indoor and outdoor settings. For these reasons, they work well for storing water, liquor, wine, and parts. They are often seen at parks and other public spaces where they are used as garbage disposal and recycling containers. In contrast, fiber drums are best suited only for dry or solid materials, unless equipped with an inner lining or coating, and are not suited to the outdoors.

30 Gallon Drum Design and Customization

Aside from their base materials, 30 gallon drums have many variable features and accessories that further specify their uses and capabilities. Plastic, steel, and stainless steel drums may have either an open top or a closed top. An open top may be completely separate and removable, or it may still be attached. Open top drums may come with bolt rings, rubber gaskets, or quick lock technology to aid in their reliability and prevent spillage. Closed top drums feature one or two openings to pour and vent drum contents, which can be closed with a stopper called a bung. Accessories for 30 gallon drums include drum covers, drum recycling lids, steel domes, safety drum funnels, poly drum funnels, drum plug openers, and drum openers.
